Apologies for not keeping up with this blog as I intended! It just got too much towards the end, but I am over the moon to announce that I took out first place in the Figure Novice division at the 2014 IFBB Victorian State Championships last Sunday! I have uploaded more photos to the Competition Gallery. Not only was I really proud of my own win, but fellow vegan competitor Renae Thomas took home gold in the Bikini Open division as well! She's beautiful inside and out, as well as so inspiring and knowledgeable. She has a really helpful and informative YouTube channel, I suggest you all check it out: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG99Z24jtk_0vprCJoIkVMA
Though my journey competing as a vegan, I've learned that, diet aside, there are a lot of non-vegan products and accessories associated with primping and priming your body for the stage. The first couple of comps I did, I found it almost mind-boggling trying to find alternatives. So here's a list of must-haves to get you on the stage 100% cruelty-free!
Not quite a full-body workout, but this week I'm focusing on hitting all muscle groups multiple times, and keep more intensity and higher reps into my training.
I didn't get around to posting my workout yesterday, so there will (hopefully) be two posts today!
Yesterday I trained shoulders and abs. I'm focusing a little more on intensity and reps now, and including supersets and dropsets even more.
Today I was feeling chest and back. As you have probably noticed, I don't always follow a set plan with my training. I train how I feel, as I know that in my case, if I really enjoy my sessions I train harder! I find teaming these two muscle groups together creates quite an intense and demanding session, which I love! I was feeling energized and strong today, so it was a good day for a tough workout! I didn't do cardio today - I will do a couple of sessions next week for my conditioning, but I'm already thinking about my post-comp plan, and preserving my metabolism as much as possible.
I didn't do a blog post yesterday, as it was a rest day for me. I woke up with an itchy throat and blocked nose, and as everyone around me seems to be getting sick, I was worried I'd picked up a virus, but after a day of rest I felt 100% and ready to hit it again today for arms and abs.
I was feeling great today! Energized, positive, excited, and proud of all the hard work I've been putting in! I hit the gym for another full-body workout, but instead of doing a compound exercise for shoulders, I included a couple more isolation exercises for chest and back, as I trained shoulders alone yesterday.
I finished the day with some evening cardio, an easy 30 minutes on the elliptical just to get the blood moving. I haven't done cardio for a few days so it felt good.
I usually alternate my heavy full-body days with arms and abs, but seeing as I gave my arms a good thrashing already this week, I felt like working on my most prized possession... delts!
I haven't done cardio for a few days now. I was starting to feel pretty fatigued the last couple of days, so I gave my body a break and had a nice big feed last night. Now I'm feeling re-fueled and ready to take on the next week and a half!
I'm not sure if I will do much more cardio before the comp - I usually cut it out a couple of weeks before the day, but I often feel my condition is a little sharper when I do it. I'll probably do a couple more sessions next week, but the hard work is pretty much done for now and I'm feeling close to being ready.
I had trouble sleeping last night, woke up at 2am feeling nervous and hungry, so I actually ended up having my breakfast and going back to sleep! Up again at 5 and had a protein shake before hitting the gym for another full body session. Didn't get around to abs again, but it'll happen. I might do cardio later, depends on how I feel. If I do, it will be an easy half hour walk or cycle on my spin bike. Right now I'm just trying to maintain my muscle, and cardio is really more for conditioning and to get the blood flowing than anything else.
In between heavy full-body days, I like to throw in some arms and abs. This morning I felt like I was having a little trouble feeling the muscle and getting a pump, so instead of training abs I did an extra superset of arms. Certainly felt it by the end! I might train abs later today, if not tomorrow.
