Phew! December was a busy one for me, and I didn't get a chance to review my favourite item in the November edition of The Vegan Box... which was the dazzlingly beautiful and equally delicious Freeze Dried Pink Pitaya Granules from Just Blends! Here it is, a month late!
Pitaya, or dragonfruit, is a superfruit grown in the tropical regions of South East Asia and South America. It is an exotic tropical fruit belonging to the cactus family.
At first I was sceptical - I had seen so many amazing Instagram posts featuring dragonfruit, that in my mind, I had a pre-conceived idea of what I thought it should taste like. When I finally had the chance to try some for the first time at a breakfast buffet in Hong Kong, I was underwhelmed. The fruit seemed dull and lacking in sweetness, despite what I had imaged.
Before trying these pitaya granules, I had the expectation of flavourless chunks of colour. To my astonishment, the flavour and sweetness was quite enhanced compared to the fruit I had tried, yet not overbearingly sweet.
I had heard of it being used in smoothies, but I'm really not much of a smoothie guzzler (some vegan I am!) So I baked a batch of buckwheat granola, and mixed the granules in afterwards.
They brought my granola to life, adding a completely unique flavour and sweetness, and a beautiful speckled hue that almost sparkled!
Besides it obvious aesthetics, and beautiful taste, I learned that there is more to love about pitaya:
Above is a picture of pitaya plants, and next to it my granola mix, being used as a green smoothie topping by my friend Adrian (recipe for my granola will be coming soon... once I successfully re-create the mix!)
Whether you're looking for something to sweeten up your breakfast oatmeal, make a pretty granola/rawnola, topping for nice-cream or smoothies, or to make your smoothies look totally wild, I highly recommend this interesting, nutritious and rare product!
Well done, Just Blends!
